Recently, I attended a business lunch where Sam Carpenter, author of the book “Work the System” was the presenter.  His comments and his book got me thinking.  (My wife would say that can be dangerous.)  Am I and my colleagues working the system or is it working us?

So what does this mean?

Many business owners, sales people, managers and highly touted professionals go to work each day reacting to what comes up.  They are putting out fires, moving from hotspot to hotspot.  At the end of the day they are exhausted.  Have they moved their business or department forward or have they gone backwards?  In essence, the business is working them because the “systems” they have in place are either nonexistent, in efficient or not being followed.  Unfortunately, this person is so buried in the sand of problems they cannot see a way out.

The flip side of this challenge was illustrated by a young entrepreneur in Texas.  This woman has become the highest earning female in her company in a period of 16 months.  What did she do?  The first thing she did was to create a vision for her business.  She met with successful people, sought their counsel, looked at what they were doing.  Next, she wrote out the steps that would lead to accomplishing the goals.  She kept her systems simple and executed her strategies violently.

Was this perfect from the start?  NO.  She had to make changes, try different tactics within the framework of her business.  Her focus was on working towards her objective, never wavering when obstacles arose.
